I still remember what my first guitar lesson like it was yesterday (it was in March 1988). I was nervous, excited, and out of my comfort zone. I’d been singing since I could remember and I’d watched older cousins and my dad play guitar occasionally, however I knew nothing about guitar apart from it being pretty cool.
I have taught students curriculum for graded exams for the Royal School of Music, Trinity College of London, and the New Zealand NCEA Music Levels 1, 2, and 3. During that time I was accountable to students, boards of trustees, and other music teachers, so I had to get results because my job was on the line if I didn’t. If I took shortcuts in teaching they may have passed initially but it would’ve become more and more difficult and problematic as they advanced.
Some teachers claim to teach without theory, but in truth all lessons contain some type of theory. Failing to teach some theory is a grave injustice to a student. The key is to introduce theory within a practical context.
