Vals Venezolano No. 2 ‘Andreina’ by Antonio Lauro
INTRODUCTION to Vals Venezolano No. 2 Guitar Course
Vals Venezolano No. 2 “Andreina” as it is also known, belongs to a set of waltzes composed by the Venezuelan classical guitarist & composer extraordinaire Antonio Lauro. This particular piece belongs to a collection of his waltzes known rather unimaginatively as ‘Quattro Vals Venezolanos’ or ‘Four Venezuelan Waltzes’ probably named by the original publisher.
One of the notable aspects of “Vals Venezolano No. 2” is its modulation to the relative minor key, which adds a layer of emotional depth and complexity to the piece. The shift between major and minor keys creates a dynamic contrast, enhancing the expressive quality of the music.
I have added in a new set of fingerings for the left & right hands to facilitate easier & faster learning of this beautiful Venezuelan waltz, and below are a few tips to keep in mind when learning and performing this lovely waltz:
-
Relax. This piece is quick and complicated and it’s easy to become tense as it progresses
-
Try a diminuendo instead of the more obvious and ubiquitous crescendo as you move up towards the high E on the 12 fret of the 1st string
-
Use open strings to help with the big position shifts towards from the 1st fret to the 7th fret, and from the 12 fret to the 2nd fret
Musical Style
Antonio Lauro’s musical style is deeply rooted in the folk traditions of Venezuela, blending classical techniques with elements of indigenous and popular music. His compositions often feature rhythmic complexity, lyrical melodies, and rich harmonic textures, showcasing his ability to create music that is both technically challenging and emotionally engaging. Lauro’s works are celebrated for their authenticity and expressiveness, making them a staple in the classical guitar repertoire. His contributions have significantly enriched the guitar’s literature, providing guitarists with a diverse and culturally rich selection of pieces to explore.
