Introduction
Isaac Albeniz was a brilliant Spanish composer from the latter part of the 19th century. Many of his piano compositions have found great popularity as guitar transcriptions and in some instances have risen above the original piano works and entrenched themselves firmly in the classical guitar repertoire of modern times. The most famous pieces are probably Asturias, Granada, and Mallorca. “Sevilla” is taken from the Suite Española Op. 47 written in 1886 and is one of the four original pieces that comprised the suite originally composed for piano. Several other pieces were added in 1912 – Aragón, Asturias, Cádiz, and Castilla.
“Sevilla” has been expertly transcribed for classical guitar, allowing guitarists to explore its rich melodies and rhythmic vitality. The piece is set in the key of G major with the sixth and fifth strings tuned down a whole step to D and G respectively, and typically performed at an Allegretto tempo, around 100-120 BPM, providing a lively and dance-like character. “Sevilla” features a distinctive mix of lyrical passages and rapid, intricate fingerwork, with modulations to keys such as Eb major, D major, and a key change to C minor accompanied by a tempo change, adding variety and depth. The guitar arrangement retains the original’s dynamic contrasts and vibrant rhythms, making it a favourite among guitarists for its technical challenges and expressive potential.
Performing “Sevilla” requires a refined technique and an understanding of its stylistic nuances. The guitarist must master the rapid scale passages, arpeggios, and strumming patterns that are characteristic of Spanish guitar music. Attention to phrasing, dynamics, and rhythmic precision is essential to convey the piece’s lively and spirited nature, capturing the essence of Andalusian folk music.
Almost every guitar technique that you can think of is used in this piece including rasguedos, slides, harmonics, trills, rest strokes & free strokes – it’s all here. To vary the piece I like to play the middle section using predominantly sul tasto timbre with rest strokes.
