Introduction

I heard this piece during my first year at Victoria university. A good friend allowed me to borrow his cassette tape of Julian Bream’s 1970 recording ‘Romantic Guitar’. From that time on I never forgot it and I was thrilled years later to come across the music and subsequently learn it.

“Adelita Mazurka,” composed by Francisco Tárrega, is one of the most beloved pieces in the classical guitar repertoire. Tárrega, a seminal figure in the development of modern classical guitar, composed this piece during the Romantic period, a time when expressive and emotive music was highly prized. Known for his virtuosic technique and lyrical compositions, Tárrega’s works have become essential for classical guitarists around the world.

“Adelita” is a short yet evocative mazurka, a dance form that originated in Poland and became popular across Europe in the 19th century. Characterized by its triple meter and distinctive rhythmic accents, the mazurka in Tárrega’s hands transforms into a vehicle of delicate expression and nuanced dynamics. “Adelita” combines a poignant melody with intricate fingerings, requiring the guitarist to convey both technical precision and deep emotional sensitivity.

My performance here is largely influenced by Julian Bream but I have taken more than a few liberties with the rhythm which may or may not be to everyone’s tastes.
