Mazurka en Sol by Francisco Tárrrega

Introduction

“Mazurka en Sol” is one of Francisco Tárrega’s hidden gems. I first heard it many years ago on Julian Bream’s album ‘Romantic Guitar Vol. 1’ released in 1970. I haven’t heard another guitarist of his ilk record it since that time, although I’m sure someone must have. Anyway, I’ve decided to share my interpretation with you all.

“Mazurka en Sol” by Francisco Tárrega is a delightful piece that captures the elegance and rhythmic vitality of the mazurka dance, transcribed for classical guitar. Francisco Tárrega, a pivotal figure in the classical guitar world, composed this piece to showcase the expressive potential and technical versatility of the guitar. The piece is set in the key of G major and is characterised by its lively tempo and dance-like rhythms, typical of the mazurka form. Throughout the piece, Tárrega employs key changes and modulations to create contrasting sections, adding depth and variety to the musical narrative. The composition features a blend of melodic lines and harmonic richness, demanding both technical precision and interpretive sensitivity from the performer. Its playful and spirited nature makes “Mazurka en Sol” a favourite among guitarists, providing a perfect balance of challenge and enjoyment.

Here are a few ideas to keep in mind when learning and performing this piece:

  • Develop left-hand finger strength in order to do the 4 fret hammer-ons

  • Choose a ponticello position to make the natural harmonics ring clearly

  • Push with the elbow to ensure that the slides remain clear, controlled, and audible throughout the shift
