Yet another brilliant short piece in ternary (ABCA) form by Francisco Tárrega. Featuring a drop-D tuning and a 2/4 time signature this piece provides a nice departure from standard tuning and the most common 4/4 time signature.
Without a doubt this is one of the coolest pieces that I’ve learned this year. For me it ranks alongside Pavana Capricho by Isaac Albeniz for my favourite pieces of all time.
I’m a huge fan of Isaac Albéniz and his music. Although he was a pianist his works (when transcribed for guitar) are absolutely exquisite and sit perfectly upon six strings. This piece is not as famous as his opus magnum ‘Asturias’ nevertheless it is a masterful work to play on guitar.
A stunning piece that is challenging yet immensely rewarding. Some big stretches will push even the most nimble fingers! Thank you Barrios.
A stunning, vibrant, and energetic piece from Gaspar Sanz. Those of you that are familiar with the Fantasia para un Gentilhombre guitar concerto by Joaquin Rodrigo will know the he used this piece as the thematic content for the final movement.
Another quiet achiever from Francisco Tárrega.
This waltz by Ferdinado Carulli is a light and relatively easy piece that probably sits at around the grade 3 TCL or RSM level.
The Mazurka Choro by Villa Lobos is probably not as popular as it should be. Despite being a long piece it is repetitive in nature and probably sits at around grade 6 to 7 with TCL or ABRSM.
Ferdinando Carulli was one of the busiest composers of the later part of the 18th century right into the middle of the 19th. This lovely Andantino makes a wonderful and lyrical right-hand study.
